Description
First off, who the heck are Brod & Taylor!? It’s not as recognizable a name, as say Chef’s Choice or Lansky, so a quick introduction is warranted. Brod & Taylor was founded officially in 2010 by Michael Taylor, and their first product strangely enough was a home proofer for baking breads. It wasn’t until later that veteran Engineer, Michael Taylor decided to delve into knife sharpening, and he did so by seeing the Brod and Taylor professional knife sharpener from concept to completion. It’s an interesting story of an American company founded in Williamstown, Massachusetts. If you’re interested in reading more, please check out their website here.
Pros:
- Easy To Use & Setup – This is the biggest selling point of the Brod and Taylor professional knife sharpener; people everywhere love the fact that the sharpener requires no initial setup, hardly any maintenance (Brod & Taylor claims the abrasives last over 5 years), and is very easy to use. Brod & Taylor suggests 3 techniques for sharpening depending on the condition of your knife: Coarse sharpening for dull or damaged knives, fine sharpening for aligning the edge without metal removal, and polishing to give you a smooth, sharp blade. There is also a quick guide on the bottom of the sharpener, so you don’t have to keep looking at the instructions.
- Elegant Stainless Steel Design – This is for those of you who care about how something looks on your kitchen counter. Personally, I do give some consideration as to what “looks nice enough” to display on my kitchen counter, so I consider this a pro to that regard. There are some sharpeners I own (which I shall not speak off) that are deep inside a storage cabinet simply because they are not fit to be placed on a kitchen counter top. The Brod and Taylor professional knife sharpener blends in nicely with the rest of my stainless cutlery!
- Ability To Sharpen Serrated Knives – This was obviously going to be a pro for me, considering the fact that so few knife sharpeners on the market can sharpen serrated blades as easily as the Brod and Taylor professional knife sharpener! Most importantly, you do not lose the serrations when using this sharpener; it is a gentle process almost akin to use a sharpening rod. I was a skeptic to begin with, but I am very impressed with how my serrated knives look after being sharpened. Check out the video below demonstrating the knife sharpener in action!
Cons:
- Price – Price is an important factor. While I love the Brod and Taylor professional knife sharpener, I think it is a little pricey for my liking. Click here to check out latest pricing on amazon. Is it worth the extra money to get this knife sharpener? If you’re looking for no hassle sharpening and honing with a device that can be easily placed and stored in your kitchen, then yes it is.
